Arovane- Cry osaka cry

September 25, 2008

Arovane is the recording name of German electronic music artist Uwe Zahn. Zahn was born in Germany in 1965. He first began experimenting with rudimentary audio equipment and keyboards when he was 15. Arovane’s sound is unique and can be characterized as ethereal, intellectually melodic, organic, warm and ambient yet technically involved with structured, often heavy, Breakbeat and Hip hop influenced beats. It is richly layered with synths and textured distortions and focuses more on generating a melancholy nostalgic feeling then 4-on-the-floor dance steps. The tempo’s are in the midrange and has been labeled as IDM by many. Arovane can possibly be compared to a blend bewtween the robotic glitch sound of early Autechre and the expansive open synth-laden fields of Boards of Canada. Zahn and his music are often referred to as being melodically advanced.

Silent Strike

September 12, 2008

Silent Strike is Ioan Titu, a young talented Romanian artist. Here in Romania, you can easily count someone’s talent by the number of important openings for big artists. Silent Strike opened for most of them, so he is kind of making this a trademark. There are lots of other Romanian artists, but what I noticed in Silent Strike’s show is that he is very professional: he’s not just filling dead space – he’s making a real show, which is a step forward for the Romanian scene.

White Space

August 8, 2008

White Space was created as a variation on the theme of Creation. The work uses the Creation story of Adam as a guide (“formed man from the dust of the ground”). A human head appears as animated ‘dust’ as it emerges from and descends into a chalky white pool. While the non-narrative short film can viewed as the original “man” being created by God, there are also references to science-fiction and the head takes on a ghostly ethereal quality…like an alien being from another planet. Influences of David Lynch as well as the repetitious music of minimalist composers Philip Glass and Steve Reich can also be seen. In addition to directing the video, Jym Davis also appears in the work.

Aphex Twin – Icct Hedral (Philip Glass Orchestration)

Icct Hedral is the Aphex Twin / Philip Glass adaptation of the track lcct Hedral, which originally appears on Aphex Twin’s “I Care Because You Do” album.

Almost everybody know that Richard David James (born 1971), better known as Aphex Twin, is an electronic music artist who has been described as “the most inventive and influential figure in contemporary electronic music”.

Koyaanisqatsi, also known as Koyaanisqatsi: Life out of Balance, is a 1982 film directed by Godfrey Reggio with music composed by Philip Glass and cinematography by Ron Fricke. The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse photography of cities and many natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music. In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsi means ‘crazy life, life in turmoil, life out of balance, life disintegrating, a state of life that calls for another way of living’, and the film implies that modern humanity is living in such a way. The film won the “Francis Ford Coppola Presents” endorsement at the 1982 New York Film Festival, and Coppola is now credited as an executive producer. In an interview, Godfrey Reggio says “…Coppola would like to do everything possible to make this available to the public, so he put his name on it”
